Each month, we’ll focus on a different topic:

Tackling the winter blues, this session focuses on tips for improving mood and well-being during the darker months. We’ll explore small, everyday moments that can brighten the day, from engaging activities to reconnecting with nature. Emphasis will be placed on maintaining routines and finding joy in daily activities, which can significantly enhance mood and provide a sense of normality.

26th February 2025: Unpacking Memories & Relationships

Delve into the power of long-term memories in fostering connections. We’ll share stories, discuss creating memory books or videos, and explore how reminiscing can strengthen intergenerational relationships. Using familiar photographs and music can stimulate memories and encourage meaningful conversations, enhancing bonds between individuals with dementia and their family and friends.

24th March 2025: Unpacking Communication

Explore communication strategies, balancing truth-telling and compassion, and managing challenging conversations. Guest insights will include tips for handling moments of confusion or distress. We’ll discuss the importance of non-verbal cues, active listening, and patience, as well as techniques like validation therapy to affirm the feelings of individuals with dementia.

21st April 2025: Unpacking Outdoor Adventures

With spring in full swing, this session explores how to take advantage of the outdoor possibilities the season brings. We’ll discuss sensory walks, reconnecting with nature in the garden, visiting local parks, and planning outdoor activities like picnics and meet-ups. Discover how gardening and community allotments can provide joy and connection, and learn practical tips for making outdoor experiences dementia-inclusive, enjoyable, and accessible.

19th May 2025: Unpacking Nutrition & Hydration

This session addresses the challenges associated with eating and drinking for individuals with dementia, such as changes in appetite, sensory preferences, and routines. We’ll provide guidance on adapting to summer dining habits, including eating outdoors, planning dementia-inclusive picnics, and managing foods like finger snacks. Learn how to balance hydration, accommodate dietary needs, and create comfortable mealtime settings as the weather warms up.

16th June 2025: Unpacking Change & Travel

Practical advice for navigating changes to routine during summer holidays, encouraging travel, and maintaining stability. We’ll offer tips on preparing for trips, managing expectations, and ensuring comfort and safety during travel. Planning ahead and maintaining familiar routines can help reduce anxiety and confusion during changes.

15th July 2025: Unpacking Community & Inclusion

Foster dementia-inclusive communities through shared stories and tips for creating welcoming spaces. We’ll discuss local resources, support groups, and ways to engage in community activities that are accommodating to individuals with dementia. Building a supportive network can enhance quality of life and reduce feelings of isolation.

16th September 2025: Unpacking Sundowning

Address sundowning (late-day confusion) and share practical strategies to manage its impact. We’ll explore potential triggers, such as fatigue or overstimulation, and discuss calming techniques, environmental adjustments, and routine planning to alleviate symptoms. Understanding and addressing the causes of sundowning can improve evening routines and reduce stress for both individuals with dementia and their carers.

21st October 2025: Unpacking Festive Seasons

Preparing for Diwali, Halloween, Hanukkah, Christmas, and Bonfire Night. Advice on creating calm spaces and managing sensory overload while encouraging meaningful family conversations. We’ll offer tips on adapting traditions to be more dementia-friendly, ensuring inclusivity and enjoyment during celebrations.

18th November 2025: Unpacking Safety

Learn about safety measures, including the Herbert Protocol, and discuss how carers can ensure the person with dementia remains safe and independent. We’ll cover topics such as home safety modifications, emergency planning, and the use of technology to monitor well-being.

16th December 2025: Unpacking Reflection & Gratitude

Reflect on the past year with stories of gratitude and inspiration. Explore ways to approach the holiday season with well-being and connection in mind. We’ll discuss the importance of acknowledging achievements, expressing appreciation, and setting positive intentions for the coming year.
