Carol Bower, Holiday Supporter
“I like the fact that you’re allowed into people’s lives for a short period of time to enable them to have a relaxing holiday. You can take a little bit of pressure off the carer by supporting the person living with dementia and allow them to unwind a little. All through the week, you’re giving them time and space whilst reassuring them. You’re connecting people with the great outdoors—you learn so much by taking people out and about, seeing nature through their eyes. It’s a great experience.”
Karen Culshaw, Holiday Supporter
“It’s a beautiful experience to know you’re giving people an opportunity they wouldn’t otherwise have. I have worked in residential care with older adults and as a community social worker helping families living with dementia. I have a desk job in adult social care policy these days, and I miss that face-to-face connection with people and being able to have an immediate impact. Volunteering helps keep me grounded about the reality of living with dementia and I can apply what I learn to my job. I get to understand the day-to-day lives of people who will use our services.”
