  • Pitching a Story Worth Hearing: Trustee Alastair Shanks
Volunteers pose in front of a river.

Having just seen in his one-year anniversary of joining Dementia Adventure’s Board of Trustees, Trustee Alastair Shanks joined us as a volunteer on our supported holiday to the Isle of Wight last December.

Dementia Adventure’s mission to support people with dementia to get outdoors and experience the benefits of nature wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and passion of our incredible volunteers. Whether it’s volunteering on a holiday, helping out in the office, or connecting us to their local community, they are a driving force behind our work and outreach.

Our Trustee Alastair Shanks has found his own unique way of championing our cause — by writing about us in his local paper! After volunteering on a holiday last December and experiencing first-hand the joy and fulfilment that these essential breaks bring to both the person living with dementia and those who care for them, Alastair wrote to the Farnham Herald to pitch them a story worth hearing.

In his published article, Alastair reflects on the week he spent with Dementia Adventure holidaymakers on the Isle of Wight and volunteers some observations for anyone contemplating a holiday with someone who lives with dementia.

Alastair Shanks has years of experience in the care sector. He is the Owner and Managing Director of Right at Home and a Dementia Friends Champion. Thank you so much to Alastair for his support!
