  • Listen: Live from Mount Toubkal – Fiona Joins The Dementia Dialogues Podcast

What do adventure, resilience and connection have in common?

In a special episode of The Dementia Dialogues podcast, Dementia Adventure CEO Fiona joins host Natalie Carter to discuss the power of stepping outside our comfort zones, the importance of meaningful connection, and how adventure can enrich our lives.

The conversation was recorded in a rather unusual setting – while descending Mount Toubkal in Morocco, the highest peak in North Africa. Against the backdrop of the challenge, Fiona reflects on the origins of Dementia Adventure, the support we provide, and how stepping outside, embracing new experiences and finding opportunities for purpose, joy and connection can help people live well with dementia. Expect the occasional interruption from passing mules and some slightly breathless conversation at altitude!

The ascent formed part of a series of challenge events organised by Get Up Give Back (GUGB), bringing together participants to raise funds for several charities, including Dementia Adventure.

After months of preparation, Fiona reached the summit following what she describes as,

"probably the toughest thing physically I have ever had to do."

The challenge began with a gruelling trek to base camp at 3,200 metres, followed by a very short night’s sleep before a 2.30am wake-up call and a 4.00am departure in darkness. With only head torches lighting the way, the team made their final ascent across snow-covered slopes, relying on crampons and determination to navigate the final 1,000 metres of elevation.

The thin mountain air added another layer of difficulty, with plenty of stops needed simply to catch a breath. But step by step, the team reached the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,176 metres, creating memories and friendships that will last long after the challenge itself.

Reflecting on the experience, Fiona said it was worth “every minute, every breath, every step”, knowing that the funds raised will help Dementia Adventure continue creating opportunities for people living with dementia and their companions to get outdoors, connect with others and experience the benefits of nature, adventure and wellbeing.
