  • Making travel more dementia-inclusive: Join our Travel and Tourism Dementia Awareness Webinar

Travel can be an important source of enjoyment, connection and independence for people living with dementia. Whether it’s a weekend away, a family holiday or a day trip, the opportunity to explore somewhere new and spend time together can mean a great deal.

But travelling can also bring challenges. Unfamiliar surroundings, busy environments, changes to routine and navigating different stages of a journey can sometimes feel overwhelming for someone living with dementia.

With the right understanding and support, travel and tourism professionals can help make these experiences more accessible, comfortable and enjoyable.

Building confidence and understanding across the travel industry

Dementia Adventure is inviting professionals from across the travel and tourism sector to join our Travel and Tourism Dementia Awareness Webinar on Monday 25 January 2027, from 1pm to 3pm.

This two-hour online session is designed to help those working in the industry better understand dementia and develop the knowledge and skills to support customers sensitively and confidently throughout their travel journey.

Co-presented by Michael Booth, an expert by lived experience, and Ruth Rabet, Global Business Director at Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, the webinar will explore how dementia can affect the travel experience and how businesses can better support customers at every stage of their journey, from the initial enquiry and booking through to the trip itself.

From the first enquiry and booking through to the trip itself, there are opportunities to make a positive difference. Small adjustments, clear communication and a better understanding of individual needs can help customers feel more comfortable and supported.

Bringing together practical experience and research

At Dementia Adventure, we believe that living with dementia shouldn’t mean giving up the opportunity to travel, explore new places and enjoy meaningful experiences.

Through our supported holidays and days out, we see how the right support can help people living with dementia continue to enjoy new experiences, spend time together and do the things that matter to them.

Our work is also informed by research exploring how inclusive experiences and opportunities to take part in meaningful activities can support confidence, wellbeing and quality of life. These principles are central to our approach: focusing on what people can do, recognising individual strengths and helping everyone feel welcome and included.

By combining our practical experience with research and the perspectives of people living with dementia, we’re committed to helping create more inclusive experiences and sharing knowledge that can make a positive difference.

What will the webinar cover?

The presenter-led session will explore practical ways to support customers living with dementia, including:

  • Understanding dementia: Thinking differently about the condition and exploring how travel can affect symptoms.
  • Supporting customers throughout their journey: Considering the needs of people living with dementia from enquiry and booking through to on-trip support.
  • Preparing for challenges: Exploring on-trip support and crisis management, helping professionals feel better equipped to respond sensitively when difficulties arise.

The webinar will also include contributions from travel industry professionals and people living with dementia, bringing together different perspectives and experiences.

There will be opportunities to ask questions throughout the session, with a 10-minute break in the middle.

Helping make travel more welcoming for everyone

Dementia awareness is an important step towards creating more inclusive travel experiences. By developing their understanding, travel and tourism professionals can help reduce barriers, respond to customers’ individual needs and make it easier for people living with dementia to continue doing the things they enjoy.

Whether you work in travel, tourism, hospitality or visitor services, this webinar offers an opportunity to reflect on your current approach, learn from others and take practical ideas back to your organisation.
