Esther, her wife Angela, and their children Josiah (13) and Tryphosa (8) experienced a life-changing supported break with Dementia Adventure.
Esther’s Story
Esther and Angela have been together for 25 years. Angela was diagnosed with young onset dementia when their children were very young. Life became increasingly challenging as the family navigated limited support, both children being identified as neurodivergent, and eventually Angela moving into a care home. Quality family time felt almost impossible.
Discovering Dementia Adventure’s breaks offered something they couldn’t create on their own. For Esther, it was a “leap of faith” — a chance to reconnect and make memories together. Angela revisited familiar surroundings, sparking joy and storytelling, while Josiah and Tryphosa met other children in similar situations, forming friendships and returning home saying, “We’re not alone!”
For Esther, the holiday gave her the chance to be Angela’s wife again, not just her carer. It gave the children normal family experiences, and Angela a sense of importance and connection that had been lost.
