Fundraising – Sam’s story

Sam

Sam helps us cross the finish line with our first charity space in the Virgin Money London Marathon.

In 2017, Dementia Adventure were lucky enough to secure a space in the Virgin Money London Marathon charity ballot. The successful applicant, Sam, 28, from Hertfordshire, was inspired to run for us when he read about our supported holidays. Sam’s Grandmother lived with vascular dementia for 10 years and his Mum was her carer.

Sam says “I read about the services you offer and I realised how useful this would have been to us during my Grandmother’s illness, if we had known about it. I wanted to raise money for a charity like yourselves who do such great work in helping people living with dementia and their carers have supported breaks and holidays. My Mother would have found the services you offer invaluable whilst she was looking after my Grandmother and would have helped take the burden off her as her carer.”

Sam, completed the marathon in an absolutely amazing 4:15:55. What a fantastic achievement. He also raised a massive £3,500 by planning some fantastic fundraising
events to raise money, alongside his race, including a 5-aside football tournament, a race night and he even asked for money instead of Christmas presents. What a guy!

Kath, Fundraising Manager at Dementia Adventure adds “It’s really difficult for smaller charities to get a place in the London Marathon. We were so excited when we got our first place and Sam did us proud! His support went directly towards our programme of supported holidays for people with dementia”

Thanks Sam!
